Cougars fire improved second round at NCAA's

CORVALLIS, Ore.--BYU improved upon Thursday's disappointing first round by shooting a team total 313 and finishing the day in 18th place at the NCAA West Regional competition at Trysting Tree golf course.

BYU was once again led by All-American Carrie Summerhays and Academic All-American Lisa Dernick.

Summerhays, who was two-under-par after nine holes, started the back nine with two boggies before hitting into the six to ten inch rough on eighteen. She finished 75 for the second round after her double boggie on the last hole.

Dernick started off the 8 a.m. tee time with a birdie on the first hole and was two-over-par at the turn. After shooting a 77 in the first round, she repeated her steady performance with another 77.

Summerhays, who qualified for the NCAAs last season after placing sixth individually at the 2000 West Regional, is in danger of not making it to this year's competition. Only the top two individuals outside of the top eight teams are invited to the championship tournament from each region.

Senior Summer Pierce turned around Thursday's dismal performance with a second round 78 to help the Cougars score nine stokes better. Pierce was followed by Nicole Newren with an 83 and Adrianne Gibby, who continues to struggle shooting a second round 85.

"I'd like to have that first day back because we played better today," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We would be right in the hunt if we could have had a better first round."

The Cougars now seem to be out of competition for the top eight spots, but look to improve upon their positioning in Saturday's final round. BYU will tee off at 11:50 a.m. PST.
