LAS VEGAS -- The BYU women's golf team positioned itself to move up in the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown by shooting a second-round 301 on Tuesday.

The Cougars shaved 11 strokes off Monday's score to hold steady at No. 10. BYU coach Sue Nyhus said she was pleased with the way the team played on Tuesday.

"They're playing really well," she said. "We're just waiting for a few things to fall into place."

Nyhus said the team was better prepared today and managed the course really well. With the team's positive attitude, it's just a matter of time before things work out, Nyhus said.

Freshman Juli Wightman played extremely well for the Cougars on Tuesday. Wightman shot a 1-over 73, the Cougars' low for the day. Along the way, she carded three birdies and only two holes over par.

The Newren sisters also continued their steady play, each contributing with low scores to the team total.

Sophomore Rachel Newren tallied a 3-over, including two birdies and 11 pars. Rachel's sister Natalie trailed her by only one stroke. Natalie carded two birdies and 11 pars just like her sister, but added a double bogey on the 18th hole.

Alexis Edwards also lowered her score on Tuesday, shooting a 77. The sophomore carded three birdies during the day to go along with her seven pars.

Margaret Gibby rounded of the team's score with 9-over 81. Gibby carded pars on half the holes and bogeyed on the other half.

Competing as an individual, Ashley Childers shot an impressive 2-over to tie for No. 35 on the individual leader board. The freshman used three birdies and 10 pars to shoot her 74.

Nyhus said she's been impressed with the two freshmen, Childers and Wightman.

"Both Juli and Ashley had great rounds today," she said. "We always love our freshmen."

Play concludes Wednesday at the Showdown with 18 holes left to play. The tournament can be followed live at golfstat.com or by accessing the link on the women's golf schedule at byucougars.com.
