HENDERSON -- The No. 21 Cougars showed that they can battle with the best of collegiate golf as they ended the first day of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in fourth place.

The BYU women's golf team had an impressive three top-25 finishers.

Senior Rachel Newren continues to lead the BYU team by finishing the round tied for second place with a two-under-par. Newren is closely followed by teammate Juli Erekson who made par and is currently tied for 11th place. Natalia Jimenez is tied for 21st with a +1.

"Rachel played really well today," said assistant coach Dave DeSantis. "We expect her to be tough competition in this tournament."

While the team is playing well, there is always room for improvement.

"We would really like to move up from fourth place," DeSantis said. "Since it was only the first day of the tournament we are still able to come back and play harder tomorrow. I hope that is exactly what we do."

The Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown is hosted by UNLV and is being held at the Anthem Country Club. Play will run through Wednesday. Live stats will be posted on golfstat.com.
