Dernick-Hardy Leads Cougars to a Record Round

SUN RIVER -- Led by senior Lisa Dernick-Hardy's scalding round of one-under 70, the BYU women's golf team set an 18-hole school record with a four-over 288, in the final round of the Mountain West Conference Golf Championship at Sun River Resort.

The Cougars' previous record of 291 was set at the Hawai'i Fall Classic in Princeville, Hawaii on November 4, 1997.

BYU, fifth after each of the first two rounds, leapfrogged UNLV to finish in fourth with a final score of 900 (309-303-288). Only New Mexico's final round 284 bettered the Cougars' 288 for the tournament.

"The first two rounds displayed our inconsistencies, and we knew we had a much better team than the scores indicated," head coach Sue Nyhus said. "Today proved that. This is how we are capable of playing everyday."

Playing in her final conference tournament, Dernick-Hardy was only one of two players in the final round to card a round below par, and she finished in a tie for 15th with a final score of 227. Dernick-Hardy, like most of the Cougars had battled inconsistent play in the first two rounds, but the final round ended up being a record setting one for BYU.

"It's pretty awesome, we are all pretty excited about it," Dernick-Hardy said. "I think it had a lot to do with us going out and playing relaxed today."

Senior All-American Carrie Summerhays was the top Cougar finisher after a final round five-over 76 to finish at 225, nine shots behind Lynette Duran of Colorado State, who took the individual crown. Summerhays was BYU's top finisher as she

tied for 10th.

Freshman sensation Natalie Newren carded a 73 to finish with a 226 total and a 14th place finish. Sophomore Nicole Newren, improved markedly from her first round 80 and second round 76, to post a final round 71 as she finished in a tie

for 15th, one shot behind sister Natalie.

New Mexico ran away with the team title, as all five of its players placed in the top ten. The Lobos (293-305-284) finished 11 shots ahead of second place San Diego State (893), and 16 shots in front of third place Colorado State.

The Cougars will now await an invitation to play in the NCAA West Regionals, which will be held May 9-11 at the Stanford

Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
