LAYTON -- Former Cougar Nicole Newren-Chandler took the lead in the second round of the Utah State Women's Amateur Championship and never looked back, winning the 3-day tournament at Valley View Golf Course by two strokes over Lynsey Myers.

Newren-Chandler carded a 6-under total of 216 from the red tees on the par 74 course.

She shot two under par on the front nine and held a four shot lead much of the back nine. The closest the contest came was on the 16th hole when she missed a short par putt and saw her lead trimmed to two strokes, but she promptly birdied the 17th hole and had three shots to play with on the final hole.

Newren-Chandler said she was a bit surprised to find herself atop the leader board at the conclusion of the tournament.

"I've never been the leader, or been able to keep a lead in my college career," she said. "It's a big surprise."

With the win, Newren-Chandler earned a spot on the Utah team for the Utah-Arizona Shootout in September.

Wednesday's win will give her the boost she needs to play well in Arizona.

"[Winning the State Am] is a real confidence builder for me," Newren-Chandler said.

Newren-Chandler's Cougar teammates faired well at the State Am as well. Margaret Gibby finished just three strokes behind Newren-Chandler to land in third place. Natalie Newren, the 2001 State Am Champ, finished five strokes back at 221.

BYU coach Sue Nyhus, a former State Am Champ as well, said the State Am was a great opportunity for the girls to showcase the BYU golf program.

"This was a great day for Cougar golf," Nyhus said. "I'm really proud of how our girls performed and finished today, especially Nicole."

Nyhus also participated in the tournament, tallying a 227, good enough for seventh-place finish. Former Cougars Lachell Poffenberger and Terry Hansen also played in the tournament and finished tied for fifth place.
