COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU senior Rachel Newren has been selected the Mountain West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for March. It marks the second monthly honor for Newren this season.
The Salt Lake City, Utah, native posted two top-ten finishes in March for the Cougars. At the UNLV Spring Invitational, Newren led BYU to a first-place team finish. She played especially well the first round, carding a five-under-par 67, to tie the team record and lead the tournament after the first day. She shot two-under-par and even par for the second and third rounds respectively to finish at seven-under-par for the tournament, and in third place. That was her second top-three finish on the season.
One week later, battling against the wind, she again led the Cougars with a ninth-place individual finish at the Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii with scores of 76-79-72--227, and a 3rd place team finish.
For the season, Newren has recorded a 72.7 stroke average and ranks first in the MWC in stroke average.
