San Francisco leads Cougar after first round of Dixie Classic

St. George, Utah--San Francisco's Susannah Laing shot a one-under 71 to propel her team to a 12 stroke lead over host BYU during first round action of the Utah Dixie Classic on Monday.

BYU, which trails conference foes San Diego State and Colorado State by four and two strokes respectively, is in fifth place after the first day. Adrianne Gibby led BYU shooting par on the first nine and finishing three-over-par 75. Gibby an Academic All-American had her best first round of the season and is in eighth place.

"She was on fire that first nine," teammate Jessica Gardner said. "She played smart and was solid all day long."

The Cougars were also led by All-American Carrie Summerhays who struggled during the first nine, but still finished four-over 76 and in 11th place. Senior Captain Summer Pierce was inches away from playing even, but also finished round one at four over.

"I saw a ton of birdies out there today," Gardner said. "Our team is very optimistic about tomorrow. We feel were are still in the hunt."

Individually Laing is tied with Melanie Matsumura for first place at one-under 71. Close behind is Northern Arizona's Hanna-Riikka Kuitunen who shot even to help her team to a second place 304.

The second and third rounds of the Dixie Classic will conclude on Tuesday at the Sunbrook Golf Course. The teams will tee off at 8 a.m., but may be delayed because of frost until 9 a.m.
