PROVO -- The BYU gymnastics team has announced the signings of Maddie Johnson and Jessica Villegas to national letters of intent for the 2008 season.
Both join the Cougars after highly successful club careers as Level 10 competitors. Johnson, from Park City, Utah, trained at All-American Gymnastics in Lindon. Villegas, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., trained at Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics in Phoenix.
"They are both great gymnasts," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "Both of these kids will really help us. They have tremendous upsides."
Johnson was a Level 10 Nationals competitor at All-American. While there, she placed 11th in the all-around at Level 9 Western Nationals, including a third-place mark on floor. This past year she placed sixth in the all-around at Level 10 Regionals.
Villegas enjoyed a decorated club career while training at Arizona Sunrays. She placed first in the all-around at the Level 9 Western Nationals in 2003, was the Level 10 Arizona State Champion in the all-around in 2004 and runner-up in the all-around in 2005. She was also an alternate for the 2004 Junior Olympic Nationals team. Villegas received recruiting attention from Washington State, Utah State, Arkansas and Ohio State.
In addition to Johnson and Villegas, Cattermole returns 11 competitors from last season's squad that finished fourth at the North Central Regional, including co-captains Dayna Smart, Alethea Boon and Kylee Draper.
