Viernes, Bowman Get Postseason Conference Soccer Honors

Provo, UT- (Nov. 5, 2002) Senior midfielder/forward Jeni Viernes was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year at its pre-championship banquet, today. Teammate Brooke Bowman was named Freshman of the Year.

The BYU team was also honored at the banquet receiving their MWC regular-season championship trophy.

Viernes led the Cougars to their fourth straight MWC regular-season title. The Murray, Utah native leads the conference in goals (11), goals per game (0.58), game-winning goals (6) and points (27), and is second in points per game (1.42). During the regular season she garnered two MWC Player of the Week honors.

Bowman, a midfielder from Plano, Texas scored four goals during conference play and has seven total goals on the season. She also tallied four assists for a total of 18 points.

The league also announced its First and Second Team All-Conference honorees with BYU placing five student-athletes on the list. Bowman was joined by teammates Aleisha Cramer Rose and Viernes on the First Team. Annie Hoecherl and Charlene Lui were named to the Second Team.

This year's MWC Women's Soccer Championships are being held at BYU beginning Wed., Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. with a game between no. 2 seed Utah and no. 7 seed Wyoming. Then at 4:30 p.m., New Mexico, who's seeded no. 3, will take on Air Force who finished conference play as the no. 6 seed. The final game on Wednesday is set for a 7 p.m. kick off between San Diego State, the no. 4 seed and UNLV, the no. 5 seed.

The winners' advance into one of two semifinal games on Thursday, with top--seeded BYU taking on the winner of the SDSU-UNLV game in the 7 p.m. game. The other semifinal game begins at 4:30 p.m. All games will be played on South Field, just south of the Smith Fieldhouse.
