LAKEWOOD -- The BYU softball team put together its most complete game of the season, knocking off the defending national champion and No. 9-ranked UCLA Bruins 6-4 at the Long Beach Invitational on Saturday.

BYU (10-13) scored a quick five runs over the first two innings and freshman pitcher Tori Almond tied the career high she set yesterday against Long Beach State with seven strikeouts as the Cougars claimed their first win over a top-10 opponent since beating No. 9 Stanford almost a year ago.

"The only way you beat UCLA is by playing a complete game," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "When we play the way we're capable of we can play with anyone in the country. We just need to build on that now."

Junior Jessica Dugas went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while senior Kristin Delahoussaye contributed two runs, one hit, one walk and a stolen base. Freshman Katie Manuma added a solo home run, her second on the year, in the fifth inning.

Scoring three runs in the first inning and two more in the second, BYU took its biggest lead through two innings of the season. After Delahoussaye drew a walk in the game's first at bat, Dugas singled to left field. A wild pitch moved both runners over, then freshman JC Clayton singled on a full count to bring around Delahoussaye.

Dugas scored two batters later on a UCLA (19-5) throwing error after senior Caschjen Atagi laid down a bunt and Fitu added the inning's final run when the Bruins opted to throw junior Delaney Willard out at first on a ground out.

With two on in the second inning, Dugas hit a single to left field to score junior Krista Hicks before Delahoussaye gave BYU a 5-0 by scoring on a passed ball.

Almond retired the Bruin side in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings before senior Paige Affleck was brought in during the sixth inning after Almond gave up a three-run home run. Affleck pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one more hit before closing out the win and earning her second save of the season.

"Tori did a great job in the mound and Paige did a great job closing it down," Eakin said.

Due to the city light ordinance, BYU's late game against Cal State Fullerton was canceled.

The Cougars will take a quick break before traveling to Honolulu to participate in the Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament beginning with games against Iona and Cleveland State on Wednesday, Mar. 16.
