Both Men and Women in Second After Day One

Long Beach, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2007) -- In a day that saw many season-best times set by both the BYU men's and women's swimmers, both teams find themselves in second place after day one of the Nike Cup. The Cougar men trail Stanford by 328 and they lead the third place team by 57, while the BYU women are behind UCLA by 189 points.

"We had some really good races today," BYU men's coach Tim Powers said. "It is great to see that our guys are recording a lot of season best's. We are swimming really well."

In the 200-yard freestyle relay the men's team placed in second as they finished with a time of 1:22.14, which is the fastest time of the year for the Cougars. While on the women's side, BYU finished in sixth place in the 200 free relay.

Individually the Cougars saw impressive results by both the men and the women. Zach Anderson finished in fourth place in the 500 free with a time of 4:28.36 improving his previous season-best time by more than 12 seconds. In the first time swimming the 500 free, BYU freshman Rachel Grant finished in third place in the 500 free as she recorded a time of 4:55.12.

Also swimming in an event for the first time this season, Jeffrey Su placed in sixth place in the 50 free as he touched the wall in a time of 20.66. Then in the 200 IM, Cougar freshman Sara Christiansen finished in fourth place as she took two seconds off of her previous season-best time as she finished with at time of 2:05.44.

Day two action of the Nike Cup resumes Friday at 9 a.m.
