COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU swept the women's side of the Mountain West Confernce Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors with freshman swimmer Aleesha Miller and senior diver Angela Nelson receiving the first honors of the year, while UNLV senior Richard Hortness and Air Force sophomore Kyle Van Valkenburg earned the honors on the men's side.
Miller helped BYU to a conference dual meet victory over New Mexico last weekend with wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. In the 50 free she swam a conference-best time of 23.58, while also clocking a league-best time in the 100 free (51.83). Miller also helped the BYU 200-yard freestyle relay squad win its event in a time of 135.79.
Nelson turned in first-place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events vs. UNM. In the 1-meter, she scored 272.40, while finishing with a mark of 295.90 in the 3-meter to bring home the win.
Hortness, from Medicine Hat, Alberta, won two individual races while helping the 200-medley relay team to a win and the 400- freestyle relay squad to a second-place finish as the Rebels upset No. 21 Arizona State last Saturday (October 13). He won the 50 free in a MWC-best time of 20.86, and followed with a time of 46.00 in the 100 free to earn the victory in the event. In the day's first event, he anchored the 200 medley relay team to an event-winning mark of 1:32.16.
