Men's Swimming and Diving Place Second, Women Fourth at Speedo Cup

LONG BEACH -- The No. 19 ranked BYU men's swimming and diving team placed second at the Speedo Cup hosted by UC-Irvine, while the women finished fourth.

The women, who were in sixth place starting the day, moved past MWC rivals Colorado State and Air Force to move into fourth.

Women's coach Stan Crump said he was really pleased with the heart his team showed over the three-day competition to move up in the standings.

"Our back strokers and breast strokers swam good today and our freestylers were real good," Crump said. "And we also had a good relay to close the meet."

Freshman Brittany Davis placed third in the 200 back in a time of 2:04.17, while her teammate Natasha Schlup finished right behind her in fifth, finishing in 2:05.39.

In the 100 free, Becky Pedersen finished sixth with a time of 53.26 and Nichole Tolley placed eighth in 53.65. The women also had an excellent showing in the 200-breast stroke with Tamber McCallister finishing ninth and Jamie Lambert finishing tenth. The team closed the meet by finishing fourth in the 400 free relay.

On the men's side, the Cougars finished second only to third ranked Stanford. BYU won the 400-free relay in a time of 3:01.16 and had two swimmers--Zach Anderson (1650 free) and Mark Chay (100 free)--finish second.

Anderson set a BYU and Mountain West Conference record in the 1650 free, finishing in 15:24.70.

Diogo Yabe finished third in the 200 fly and Christian Armstrong (200 breast) and Kurt Mullen (100 free) each finished seventh in their respective events.
