LAS VEGAS--Five players on the BYU women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of singles play in the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
“We had a successful day of tennis,” BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer
said. “The girls played well in rough conditions.”
In singles competition, sophomore Mackenna Maddox
beat Wyoming’s Christina Gecheva in three sets after falling in the first, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6. Junior Morgan Anderson
also beat her opponent, Northern Colorado’s Steph Catlin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
The BYU freshmen also had a strong showing. Toby Miclat
defeated Colorado’s Carla Manzi, 6-2, 6-2, while Mayci Jones
advanced against Montana’s Laurence Pelchat, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Jones and Miclat beat Wyoming’s Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova, 8-4. Ware and Anderson also advanced with a victory over Kathryn Hughes and Maureen Slattery of Denver, 8-2. Daniels and Maddox fell in a close match against New Mexico State’s Annemieke Witte and Ross-Poly Nguyen, 8-6.
The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 7-10, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
