Four Cougars Named Academic All-MWC

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Four members of the BYU women's tennis team were recognized for their academic achievement as the Mountain West Conference released its spring 2008 Academic All-Mountain West Conference team on Thursday. Freshmen Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova, along with sophomores Kristina Doerr and Chie Hayasaka received the honor.

Doerr stepped up for the Cougars during the 2007-08 season, seeing the majority of her playing time coming at the No. 2 singles position. The Alpine native received All-MWC honors for the first time after posting a 6-2 singles record against MWC opponents. Ranked as high as No. 80 nationally, Doerr maintained an impressive eight-match win-streak over two months, upsetting three ranked opponents during that time.

To kick off MWC play, Hayasaka posted an impressive five-match winning streak. The Japan native teamed up with Carney for a 10-5 doubles record.

BYU led the MWC in academics in the Spring, as 148 Cougars were named to the Academic All-MWC team, naming 54 more student-athletes than the second-highest institution.

Spring sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
