SALT LAKE -- The BYU women’s tennis team advanced two players to the second round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Championship. Junior Kristina Doerr and freshman McCall Jones both won their respective matches to secure a spot in the Round of 32.
Doerr defeated her Wichita State opponent 7-5, 6-4 and will face Kansas State’s Antea Huljev. Jones breezed past Jie Zeng from Tulsa 6-1, 6-1 to move on in the draw. Junior Chie Hayasaka lost the first set against Oklahoma State’s Jo-Anne Karaitiana and forced a tiebreak in the second but was unable to notch the win.
The women’s team saw limited victories in doubles competition despite strong play by the Cougars. Doerr and Hayasaka won their first match 8-6 before falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed from Arkansas 9-7. Jensen and Nedakovic also won their first- round match 8-3 but were unable to clinch the victory over Boise State pair Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk. The duo of Carney and Jones lost a close match in the first round to opponents from New Mexico after battling to a 9-8 scoreline.
The tournament will resume Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center at the University of Utah.
