Harrison finishes first in 3,000m steeplechase at Mt. Sac

WALNUT, Calif. – During the distance carnival at the Mt. Sac Relays Thursday, Andrea Nelson Harrison led the Cougars with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

“Andrea had an incredible race,” BYU coach Patrick Shane said. “Though she started out a bit slow, she picked up momentum and finished in the top of her section. All of our runners did a great job finishing strong tonight.”

After a slow start Harrison started gaining momentum and began closing on the leaders. After passing the majority of the runners, she past the last three at the finish line to win the race.

Harrison finished with a new personal-best time of 10:35.88.

Competing in another section of the 3,000m steeplechase were Jennica Redd and Maren Hanson Fassmann. Redd and Fassmann finished 18th and 21st overall with times of 10:55.35 and 10:59.97, respectively.

In the 1,500-meter race, Candace Eddy Carlisle led the way finishing second in her section, 15th overall in 4:24.51. Carlisle, who also past several runners toward the end of the race, came within one-one hundredth of a second from winning her section.

Competing as the sole runner from BYU in the 10,000 meters was Nicole Nielsen. Nielsen also finished second in her section with a time of 35:46.27.

Tomorrow several Cougars compete in the 800 meters and the 5,000 meters.
