BYU Finishes With a Win

LAS -- The Cougars' final tune-up before next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament proved successful as No. 22 BYU concluded the regular season with a four-game win at UNLV.

"I thought it was a successful conclusion to the regular season," said BYU coach Jason Watson, whose team won the MWC regular-season title. "I think our team is as prepared as we could hope to be entering next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament."

BYU's outside hitting duo of Chelsea Goodman and Erica Lott once again led the way for the Cougars as they each recorded 21 kills. Goodman also paced BYU in digs with 13 while sophomore Lindsey Evans added 11 and true freshman Janvier Beaumont contributed 10. Rachel Dyer rounded out BYU's double-digit kill effort with 11 in addition to leading BYU with seven blocks. Senior Lauren Richards Evans, who is 23rd in the nation in assists per game, tied her season high with 62 assists.

The Cougars fell behind early in game one but put together a six-point run to take a 12-9 lead. UNLV responded with offensive firepower to go up 16-15 and traded points with BYU from there, holding the Cougars at bay until a Rebel hitting error tied the game at 23-23. UNLV wasn't done, however, as they stifled BYU's offense to earn game point at 29-27. Goodman saved the first point with one of her four game-one kills, but it was not enough as the Rebels took game one 30-28.

Game two saw a 14-9 BYU lead erased seven points later with a 6-1 Rebel run. A block by Goodman and Dyer gave the Cougars another lead at 18-17, which they stretched into a four-point advantage at 24-20. UNLV attempted a comeback by cutting the lead to two but would get no closer as a kill from Erica Lott sealed the 30-26 victory.

BYU took control in game three, hitting .500 through the first 15 points while holding the Rebels to a .059 attack efficiency and a 13-15 deficit. The Cougars' dominance continued throughout the game as they cruised to a 30-22 win by virtue of a .548 hitting percentage. Game four was more of the same as BYU was never seriously threatened en route to a 30-23 victory.

With the win, the Cougars conclude the regular season 23-2 overall and 14-2 in the MWC, their best regular-season record since a 26-2 mark in 1998. BYU will return to Las Vegas next week for the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed. Play begins on Thursday when the Cougars take on the winner of Tuesday's play-in-game between Air Force and TCU.
