PROVO -- For the BYU women's volleyball team, spring means more than just sunshine and sandals. It also signals a return to competition as the Cougars will play in four tournaments over the next month. The spring schedule begins this weekend and will culminate with a tournament hosted by BYU on April 15th.
"Our team is fortunate to be able to play a diverse spring schedule," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "The competition we face will serve as great preparation for the 2006 season."
The events will give the Cougars a chance to flex their muscles after a busy winter of practice. BYU returns all but two letterwinners from last year's 25-4 team that won the Mountain West Conference title, including MWC Player of the Year Lindsy Hartsock and All-MWC honorees Kim Wilson, Erica Lott and Chelsea Goodman.
BYU will begin tournament play this Saturday at Pepperdine University competing against Pepperdine, Northern Arizona, CSU Northridge and Loyola Marymount. On March 25th, the Cougars will travel to Salt Lake City to play along with Idaho State, Utah State, Weber State, Montana State, UVSC, Wyoming, Salt Lake Community College, Westminster and host Utah. BYU went 8-2 against those teams last season.
The Cougars' spring schedule continues on April 8th at Kansas State in a tournament field that includes Kansas State, Arkansas, Wichita State, Creighton and Nebraska-Kearney. BYU defeated Kansas State last year.
Finally, BYU will return home to host the last tournament on the schedule on April 15th. Colorado State, UNLV, Utah State, Utah and Washington State will also be in Provo to compete in the event. The Cougars were 5-3 against those teams last season. More information will be available on this tournament as the date approaches.
