MANHATTAN, Kansas – BYU women’s volleyball won its third-straight match, defeating Georgia Southern 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-9) Friday at the Varney’s Invitational at Kansas State. Including a sweep against Idaho in the morning, the Cougars are now 4-2 on the season.

Heather Hannemann added a career-high 48 assists while setting the Cougars to a season-best .361 hitting percentage. Kendalyn Hartsock patrolled the back row for BYU, posting a match-high 17 digs.

“Overall today was great,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “I thought we played a good Georgia Southern team and I’m really pleased with our effort. After losing a tough third set we responded with a great effort and won 25-9. We had great focus and played a great set. I’m really excited about the progress we made today.”

In set one, BYU took the lead for good at 8-7 on a block by Carpenter and Kathryn Lecheminant. Georgia Southern kept it close and came within one at 17-16. A Vaughn kill started a 5-1 run that helped BYU close out the set and win 25-20.

Set two was close before the Cougars jumped out to a six-point lead at 19-13 on a 5-1 run. Georgia Southern didn’t fold and fought back to within two at 23-21. Following a BYU timeout at 24-22, Hamson closed out the set with a kill.

After dropping the third set 25-23, BYU bounced back with a dominant effort in the fourth to close out the match. The Cougars started out with a 3-0 lead thanks to two Georgia Southern errors and a kill by Warner. Leading 6-4, BYU went on a 7-0 run to lead 13-4. After a Cougar service error BYU continued to roll with a 5-0 run and an 18-5 lead.

The Cougars play host Kansas State tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.

“Kansas State is a good team,” Olmstead said. “They had a good match against Georgia Southern. They have a very good volleyball program and are traditionally a good team. We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
