PROVO -- The No. 19 BYU women's volleyball team opened up Mountain West Conference play in style Friday night with a sweep of the visiting Air Force Falcons, 30-18, 30-12, 30-17. The win was the Cougars' eighth three-game victory of the season and improved BYU's record to 9-1 on the year.

"One of the things we have really focused on is being good over time," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "Our goal is always to end better than we start. I think we did that tonight. We took care of the ball better and got ourselves going. I'm pleased with what we accomplished as a team tonight."

BYU was led by junior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman, who recorded her sixth double-double of the night with 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Bryn Porter also posted double-digit digs with 10 while fellow sophomore Janvier Beaumont paced the Cougars in digs with 15. Goodman and Beaumont also recorded career-highs with five service aces each, helping BYU post a season-high 13 aces.

"Our service aces came at critical times for us and helped us put some pressure on Air Force," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "That is definitely an area we have tried to upgrade since last season, and it's nice to get a return on our investment and see the progress we've made."

The Cougars jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in game one, thanks in part to two aces from Goodman. A Jocelyn Booker kill finally got the Falcons on the board, but BYU dictated play for much of the game. Already leading by four points at 19-15, the Cougars put together an 8-0 run featuring two kills from Goodman and two aces from Janvier Beaumont. A Falcon block finally slowed the Cougars down but not for long as BYU took the game 30-18. The Cougars tied their season-high for aces in a match in game one against the Falcons with eight, including four from Beaumont.

In game two it was Air Force's turn to get off to a quick start as the Falcons grabbed their first lead of the match at 3-1. But another BYU run gave the Cougars a 7-3 lead. The Falcons attempted to make things interesting by cutting the lead to just two points at 9-7 but the Cougars responded with vigor, going on a 16-1 run before taking game two 30-12. Sophomore Bryn Porter, who hit negative in game one, put up five kills in the second period of play.

Game three saw a battle early on until redshirt freshman Stephanie Lau, making her first appearance in a BYU uniform, served four straight points including her first career ace to give the Cougars a 7-4 lead. From there, BYU never looked back, building a 27-13 lead and sprinting to the 30-17 win.

BYU will return to action Saturday night in the Smith Fieldhouse hosting the Colorado State Rams at 7 p.m. The Rams are 5-5 on the season after being swept by No. 21 Utah on Friday night. The Cougars are 45-19-1 all-time against CSU.
