Akina and Lundell tied for 15th, Cougars in 12th
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Carson Lundell and Keanu Akina are tied for 15th after 36-holes in the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Club as the Cougars find themselves in 12th with 18 holes remaining.
Lundell leads the way for the BYU team as he fired rounds of 70-74—144, for a 2-over 36-hole total. The 91st ranked player in the country carded two birdies and an eagle in round one with two more birdies in round two to keep him in the mix going into the final round.
Akina, who is competing as an individual, carded rounds of 71-73—144 to match Lundell at 2-over-par. He got off to a hot start with three birdies on his opening nine before heavy rain began to fall, leading to a couple of blemishes on the inward nine.
San Diego leads the tournament at 6-under-par after posting rounds of 275-287—562 over the first two days. No. 18 Colorado State jumped up the leaderboard into second with scores of 284-288—572. Santa Clara and LMU sit in a tie for third at 6-over-par. The Broncos recorded scores of 281-293—574 while the Lions shot 277-297—574.
The host Saint Mary’s and Fresno State round out the top-5 in a tie for fifth at 10-over-par. The Gaels carded rounds of 285-293—578 while the Bulldogs turned in scores of 282-296—578. BYU sits in 12th after two days with rounds of 294-302 for a 28-over total.
Zac Jones sits in a tie for 50th at 8-over after posting scores of 78-72—150 over the opening 46 holes. David Timmins shot 75-79—154 for a 12-over-par total in the first two rounds. Max Brenchley recorded rounds of 71-84—155 while Tyson Shelley rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with scores of 80-77—157.
BYU tees off in the final round with the Nevada Wolfpack at 9:01 a.m. PDT.
