Perez Paces Another BYU Sweep

Image

STANFORD -- BYU's perfect season start continued, as the Cougars (6-0, 4-0 MPSF) swept Stanford (0-7, 0-4) for the second consecutive night and the fourth consecutive match overall, 30-24, 30-20 and 30-28.

"We were better tonight than last night," co-head coach Shawn Patchell said. "One of our goals this season is to be better on Saturday than Friday and we accomplished that tonight."

Ivan Perez led BYU with 14 kills while hitting .524 (14-3-21) while Rodnei Santos registered his second consecutive .750 (6-0-8) hitting performance. Perez added six digs and three service aces on the night. Libero Joel Silva added a career-best 11 digs for the Cougars.

BYU hit .374 on the match while holding the Cardinal to just a .219 performance. Russell Holmes led Cougar blockers with four while adding seven kills and hitting .438 (7-0-16).

"I'm especially pleased with our serving and passing," Pachell said. "We did both better tonight. Our middles were both very efficient and that is something we always like to see. When our middles get involved like they did tonight you can tell we passed well."

In game one it didn't take long for BYU to assert itself. The Cougars got off to a quick 7-3 lead when setter Yamil Perez dealt an ace. Stanford came back with a 6-3 run to cut BYU's lead to 10-9. From there the Cougars took off, building a 26-19 lead. The two teams traded points for the rest of the match with Holmes driving home a game-winning kill.

The Cougars never trailed in the second game. With BYU leading game two 20-16, the Cougars closed the game with a 10-4 run. After a service error by Stanford's Kawika Shoji, Yosleyder Cala stepped to the service line with a 25-19 lead. Cala's serving led BYU to four consecutive points. The Cougars won the game on a service error by the Cardinal's Matt Ceran.

Game three was a close game throughout its entirety with neither team building a lead larger than three points. With the Cardinal holding to a 22-19 lead, the Cougars came roaring back. After an Ivan Perez kill that sent him to the service line, the Cougars rolled off three consecutive points to give BYU a 25-23 lead. Stanford followed with a 5-2 run to force a Cougars timeout. Out of the timeout Cala got a kill and an ace to give BYU a match point. Cala's serve helped put the Cardinal away as Stanford committed an attack error on the Cougars first match point.

BYU has won 13 consecutive games overall and has only lost one game this season (Cal-Baptist). The Cougars take a break from MPSF play as they travel to Hawaii next week for the Outrigger Tournament. BYU will play Loyola-Chicago and Penn State at the tournament.

MATCH NOTES: Cougars Hit the Road vs. Stanford

Image

PROVO -- After sweeping reigning national champions UCLA in six games, BYU will take its show on the road for the first time this season as the Cougars head to the bay area for a pair of matches against Stanford. The matches will be the second and third matches of the MPSF season. BYU has won nine of 15 matches at Stanford.

SERIES INFORMATION

The Cougars have won 18 of the 28 matches the two teams have played since 1990. Recently, BYU has dominated the series, winning the last six matches and 12 of the last 15.

The Cardinal won the first three matches in the series, winning won in each of 1990, 1991 and 1992. The Cougars then won five of the next six matches. The series was even after that until the 2004 season when BYU started its current six-match winning streak.

LAST WEEK RECAP

FRIDAY--For the first time since 2003, No. 2 BYU took No. 3 UCLA down in three straight games, as the Cougars remained undefeated 30-28, 30-22 and 30-26. Sophomore Yosleyder Cala led BYU with game-highs of 15 kills and an astounding .789 hitting percentage. Juniors Ivan Perez (11 kills) and Russell Holmes (12 kills) combined for 23 of BYU's 51 total kills.

Freshman Robby Stowell received game-high honors in digs with eight on the night. As a team, BYU recorded 27 digs to UCLA's 13. The Cougars hit .500 for the match while holding the Bruins to 41 kills on .330 hitting.

SATURDAY--For only the third time in the programs history, and the first time since 2003, the No. 2 BYU men's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep of No. 3 UCLA 30-21, 30-23 and 33-31 Saturday night at the Smith Fieldhouse. Freshman Robby Stowell led the Cougar charge Saturday night. He finished with a career-high 19 kills with five blocks while hitting .654. Ivan Perez also enjoyed a strong night with 16 kills on .542 hitting. Yamil Perez controlled the hard-hitting offense with 46 assists.

NEAR RECORD PERFORMANCES

BYU dominated UCLA in its Friday match. Two players had near-record setting nights in hitting percentage. Yosleyder Cala had the fifth best hitting night in BYU history when he posted a .789 hitting percentage (15-0-19). Not far behind him, Russell Holmes posted the sixth best performance when he hit at a .786 clip (12-1-14).

SPREADING THE WEALTH

Redshirt freshman setter Yamil Perez has been spreading the wealth evenly in the early going for the Cougars. Against UCLA, four different BYU players had double figures in kills with only Ivan Perez doing in twice. Along with Perez, Yosleyder Cala, Russell Holmes and Robby Stowell posted double-digit kills in a match.
