BYU plays through challenging weather on day one of Cowgirl Classic

STILLWATER, Okla. – Despite 35 mile-per-hour winds, junior golfer Allysha Mae Mateo shot a 71 (-1) to move into the top 10 and lead the BYU women's golf team on day one of the Cowgirl Classic on Thursday.

Mateo improved by six strokes in her second round to tie for eighth after a 77 (+5) to start the day. The Karsten Creek course and stormy conditions proved tough for everyone, with only three golfers in the field of more than 50 posted par or better in the first 18 holes. Mateo was one of only four golfers to shoot under par in the second round.

"It was very tough conditions today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We felt good about a few players getting better as the conditions got worse throughout the day."

The Cougars are tied for seventh place after 36 holes, rounds of 319 and 307 on the day. Texas Tech is leading the tournament, posting a 298 an 293 over two rounds.

Kerstin Fotu is tied for 22nd with a 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) while Naomi Soifua is tied for 37th after a 79 (+7) and 82 (+10). Fotu had a hole-in-one on hole 15 in the first round.

Annick Haczkiewicz (85, 77) and Cynthia Tu (84, 89) are in 41st and 48th, respectively.

BYU will play a final round of 18 holes tomorrow, pending weather delays. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
