Cougars, Aggies Square off in Logan
PROVO -- Coming off a third-place showing against two of the top teams in the country, the BYU women's gymnastics team will look to improve when the Cougars return to action Friday against Utah State in Logan.
Last week BYU opened its season by finishing third in a four-team meet in Corvallis, Ore., which included top-ranked Florida, preseason No. 13 Oregon State and Iowa. The Cougars scored a 190.075 but had some struggles early on floor and late on beam, usually one of their best events.
"We got through it. Going in I was concerned with a couple things I'm not concerned about now though. We're just trying to get ourselves better," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said.
Utah State will compete in its third meet of the year. Last week the Aggies finished second in a four-team meet behind LSU with a 192.875. The Aggies' Jessica Parenti (39.250) and Katie Omann (38.975) took the top two spots in the all-around.
"They're a very good team," Cattermole said. "We're looking forward to going there. Our main concern though is not what they're doing. It's what we're doing. If we can stick our routines like we're capable of, that's more important than a win."
Cattermole will once again look to Kacie Capra in the all-around as well as Dayna Smart on vault, Kandis Kelly on beam and Aimee Walker Pond on bars for solid routines. The Cougars also hope to get help from Lisa Willis, coming back after redshirting with chronic fatigue last year.
Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
