No. 4 BYU tops San Diego 3-1

PROVO, Utah – The No. 4 BYU women’s soccer team stayed undefeated at South Field after beating San Diego 3-1 on Saturday night.

BYU vs. San Diego Box Score

“The girls put a lot of pressure on San Diego tonight and I really liked how we moved the ball,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “One of our team goals is to dictate the speed of play and I thought we did a good job at doing that. We’ve worked a lot on our pressure out of the back. When we get them really involved with our attack good things happen.”

The Toreros (6-8-1, 2-4 WCC) stunned the Cougar (15-0-1, 5-0-1) defense in the 12th minute as Milan Moses blasted a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. However, San Diego’s lead did not last long as Cameron Tucker crossed the ball to an open Mikayla Colohan, who one-touched it into the net just 22 seconds later to even the game at 1-all.

Tucker scored a goal of her own in the 20th minute as the Cougars took advantage of a free kick. Alyssa Jefferson and Rachel Bingham Lyman connected off the free kick before finding Tucker and taking the lead, 2-1.

After 45 minutes of play, BYU led the way in shots with 16 compared to the Toreros’ two.

Elise Flake took on the San Diego defense just two minutes into the second half and placed a shot into the far side of the net to extend the Cougars advantage to 3-1.

The Toreros’ goalkeeper racked up the saves, including a pair of one-on-ones with Flake to keep BYU from scoring any more goals.

On the game, the Cougars outshot San Diego 27-5. BYU’s Sabrina Davis tallied three saves while Amber Michel totaled 12 for the Toreros.

The Cougars travel to San Francisco on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. PDT. The game will be streamed on the WCC Network and audio broadcasts can be heard on ESPN 960 AM/ESPN 960 App and 107.9 FM.
