OGDEN -- With just a week until the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the BYU track team won eight events on Wednesday night all while resting up many athletes for the conference meet.
Less than a week after setting the school record in the pole vault, Julene Kaufusi won the pole vault competition at 12 feet 5.5 inches with teammate Mandy Kelly placing second after clearing 12 feet.
Their counterpart on the men's side, Devan Later, also won the pole vault competition. He cleared a season-best 15 feet 1.5 inches.
All-American Lindsey Metcalf and Kamila Rywelska won their events as well.
Metcalf cleared 5 feet 9.75 inches to win the high jump.
Rywelska set a season-best mark of 42 feet 0.25 inches to win the triple jump competition. Her new mark will move her up into the top-30 in the national rankings and will head into the conference championships with the best mark in the conference.
Teammate Lindsey Sommer finished second in the triple jump by leaping 39 feet 1 inch.
After taking a couple of weeks of rest, Jake Garlick swept the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Ben Gardner finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.75 seconds.
Aneta Lemeisz continues her impressive streak of great runs by winning the 400 meters. Lemeisz was just a half second behind her top time of the year, crossing the line in 54.91. She had already regionally qualified in the event.
Ann Heiner won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:35.74 with teammate Laura Taylor just two seconds behind in second place.
The 100 meter squad for the Cougars looked impressive during the competition as well. Football star Nate Soelberg finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.62, just four thousandths off his best time of the year.
Laura Hales ties the team best in the 100 meters by finishing fourth with a time of 12.38. She had earned the same mark this year at the UCLA Invitational. Challis Firl posted the second best time on the team this year, crossing the line at 12.47 to take fifth place.
The Cougars will now head to Fort Collins, Colo. to compete in the MWC Championships. The competition begins Wednesday with the heptathlon and decathlon.
