PROVO -- BYU men's volleyball player Victor Batista will play with the Dominican Republic National Team in the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation's Continental Senior Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba, September 10-15.

"It's an honor to represent my country," Batista said. "There will be a lot of good teams there and I think our team will do well. We are hoping to finish in the top three."

The Continental Senior Championship is played every two years and includes teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean. The following eight teams will participate in this year's championship: Canada, Cuba, USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Barbados, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

Batista has been a mainstay in the BYU lineup since 2004 when he arrived in Provo and immediately made an impact, helping the Cougars win their third national title and earning second-team All-America honors as a middle blocker. In 2005 he played both middle blocker and outside hitter and was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Second Team.

The Dominican Republic will play in Pool B along with Canada, Cuba and Panama.
