PROVO, Utah -- In an 11-inning game featuring 21 hits, Stephen Wells belted a walk-off home run to lead the BYU (22-21) over Seattle University (18-22) 4-3 on Thursday night.
“We made a couple mistakes in the field that allowed Seattle to get back in the game,” head coach Vance Law said. “But our guys battled back and I am proud of all of them. Chase Frampton and Wells both came through for us.”
Wells, a Washington native, was hitless in the game before his walk-off homer, his third in his Cougar career. He went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run in the game. Jaycob Brugman also homered in the game, his fourth on the season.
“I fell behind in the count but then he hung a curveball over the plate and I just got a hold of it,” Wells said. “It is an awesome feeling, something every kid dreams about.”
Chris Capper pitched 6.1 innings and allowed seven hits, three runs and five walks. Capper also struck out five before leaving the game in the seventh, but it ended up being southpaw reliever Mark Anderson recording the win.
Batting in the clean up spot for the Cougars, Alex Wolfe got BYU on the board first with an RBI single to right. Dane Nielsen scored on the Wolfe single after reaching base on a double in his first at bat.
Capper struggled with his control in the second inning, allowing a double to Seattle’s first hitter before walking three of the next five batters. The third walk came with the bases loaded and allowed the Redhawks to tie the game at 1-1.
Both offenses cooled off for the next two innings until Brugman launched his moon shot solo home run to right to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Dillon Robinson missed his chance to blow the game open for the Cougars in the bottom of the sixth when he grounded out to the pitcher with the bases loaded for the third out.
Pinch hitter Marcelino Morales got the Redhawks going in the seventh with a drive to right in his first at bat. Morales eventually scored on a bizarre fielder’s choice by the Cougars that resulted in no outs. Seattle drove in one more run in the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Frampton pinch hit for Robinson in the bottom of the eighth and came through with a deep sacrifice fly that scored Brugman to tie the game at 3-3 and led to extra innings after a scoreless ninth.
Seattle and BYU face off again Friday at 6:00 p.m. MT at Larry H. Miller Field.
