Alex Wolfe - Baseball - Sophomore - Orem, Utah
Wolfe had a monster game both offensively and defensively in the final game of the Portland series with a walk, double, two-run homer and double. He batted .357 in four games last week. He had a huge defensive play came in the 7th inning with no outs and two on when he charged from first base to field a bunt on the third base line and threw out the lead runner at third base as BYU was leading 6-3 at the time.
He then initiated a 3-4-6 double play to end the inning. He was on the receiving end of a inning-ending double play in the fifth. His two-run, 410-foot homer to the batter's eye in centerfield in the fifth broke open the game at 6-0—it was BYU’s first homer of the home season.
Jeremy Toole - Baseball - Junior - Huntsville, Texas
Toole lowered his ERA from 9.64 to 5.40. Toole had four consecutive innings when he put Portland down in order, in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. Threw 101 pitches. Struck out the final batter of the inning in the first, fifth and sixth Innings. In both those innings there were two runners on at first and second. Had hitless innings in the second and fifth. Clocked at 94 mph, but scouts were still raving when he was throwing 91 at the end of his outing which was BYU's longest this season.
Andrew Stewart - Men's Volleyball - Junior - Sandy, Utah
Team captain Andrew Stewart helped No. 8 BYU extend its win streak to four games after back-to-back wins at Pacific this weekend.
The junior knocked down a match-leading 21 kills with a .432 hitting percentage against the Tigers on Friday. After recording five kills as BYU lost the first set, Stewart helped the Cougars come out strong in the second, extending his team’s lead to 10 points at 23-13 on a kill. He scored three of BYU’s first five points in the third set and another kill set up game-point at 29-25. In the final set of the night, back-to-back service aces by Stewart sent the Cougars on a 4-0 run, putting them up 9-3 heading into the first timeout—giving him a career-high three service aces on the night. He capped the night with one final kill on match-point, clinching the overall win for BYU. Stewart’s eight digs on Friday tied a season high.
Jimmer Fredette - Men's Basetball - Sophomore - Glen Falls, New York
Fredette led the Cougars to wins at San Diego State (69-59) and over Utah (63-50) at home last week. Against San Diego State, he scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting, while recording a career-best five steals. Fredette scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half, including a personal 9-0 run to give BYU a 61-55 lead. He then dished out one of his four assists to complete a 15-0 BYU run to put the game away. Fredette also pulled down five rebounds, while hitting all six of his free-throw attempts. Against first-place Utah, Fredette scored a game-best 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while dishing out three assists and collecting two steals.
On the week, Fredette averaged 26.5 points, 3.5 steals, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He shot 51.4 percent from the field (18-for-35), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (3-for-9) and 93.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-for-15).
Paige Affleck - Softball - Sophomore - New Harmony, Utah
Affleck (5-5, 1.76) tossed two complete games for the Cougars at the Mayfair Invitational, including a seven-inning, season-best 12 strikeouts, no walk performance against Wisconsin. The 12 strikeouts matched Affleck's career best set in 2008. She finished the weekend 1-1, allowing only one earned run and one extra-base hit in 15.2 innings pitched. She made a lone relief appearance against Cal State Northridge, picking up her first save of the season. The righthander leads the team with 78 strikeouts over 71.2 inning pitched, allowing a total of 18 earned runs in her 16 appearances.
Cassidy Mears - Men's Tennis - Junior - Shawnee, Kansas
Cassidy Mears showed true leadership this weekend as his team struggled on the road. The junior continued his undefeated streak in doubles with partner Daniel Hwang. The pair earned its fifth win in a row in a 5-2 loss to Pacific. Mears secured one of those two points after handily defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-0.
Elle Carney - Women's Tennis - Sophomore - Wollongong, Australia
Elle Carney was 2-0 in singles play this week. The sophomore contributed a point in the Cougars’ 5-2 loss. In the match against Nevada, Carney won a tough three-set match to clinch the victory for the Cougars.
Mindy Nielson - Women's Basketball - Sophomore - Centennial, Colorado
Scored a team high 14 points in the loss at Utah. IT was her 10th double digit performance of the season and her 17th overall. Nielson leads the team in points and steals with 10. 7 and a total of 53 to date. She’s second in assists with 85 total.
