Kassidy Shumway – Women’s Soccer – Junior – Bountiful, Utah
Kassidy Shumway recorded her fourth goal of the year in BYU's win over UNLV. Shumway's early goal in the fourth minute of play proved to be just enough to give the Cougars their ninth unbeaten game of the season. In BYU's tie against San Diego State, Shumway led the team with five shots and also scored a goal in that game. Shumway has taken the third-most shots on the team with 27 this season. "Kassidy has really stepped up her game in the last few weeks," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "She gives us great effort, and I look forward to seeing more from her this year."
Christie Carpenter – Women’s Volleyball – Sophomore – Cedar Hills, Utah
Christie Carpenter tallied nine kills against New Mexico on Thursday to help the Cougars win their fourth conference match. Carpenter had a career-high hitting percentage with .350 as well a career-best nine digs. Against TCU, Carpenter led the Cougars in kills with 15, a career high. She also tallied a career-high 10 digs, her first double-double of the season. BYU standout, Kayla Walker was injured in the TCU game, giving Carpenter the opportunity to step up and carry the load.
Harvey Unga – Football (Offensive) – Junior – Provo, Utah
BYU junior running back Harvey Unga tied a career high with three touchdown runs while rushing for a season-best 149 yards in BYU’s win at UNLV Saturday night. The versatile runner broke off long scoring dashes of 33 and 52 yards and also ran into the end zone from the 1-yard line. His 52-yard touchdown run is the longest by a BYU back since 2006. The MWC’s leading rusher this season, Unga got BYU off to a fast start against the Rebels by scoring all three of his touchdowns in the first half while amassing 114 yards over the first two quarters. Consequently, the Cougars took a dominating 24-7 lead into the break. Showing his consistency, Unga rushed for 49 yards in the first quarter, 65 in the second and added another 35 in the third on only four carries before coming out for the night after a drive that put the Cougars up 31-14. He carried the ball 20 times to average 7.4 yards per carry. With his strong performance, the junior has now recorded a rushing score in each of the past four games and crossed the 100-yard rushing mark for the third-consecutive week. The last time Unga recorded three 100-yard rushing games in a row was during the end of his freshman season in 2007 when he passed the century mark against Wyoming, Utah and San Diego State.
Scott Johnson – Football (Defensive) – Senior – Provo, Utah
Senior safety Scott Johnson became the first BYU player to intercept two passes in a game since 2002 while recording the first two picks of his career Saturday night against UNLV. The senior captain also added one of BYU’s two pass breakups and totaled three tackles as the Cougar defense held UNLV to 337 total yards and only two offensive scores. Johnson ended an eight-play, 54-yard UNLV drive with his diving interception at the BYU 3-yard line to maintain the Cougars’ 24-7 advantage mid-way through the second quarter. He made his second pick of the game on a juggling grab mid-way through the third quarter to start a Cougar drive that increased the lead to 38-14. Before Johnson’s two-pick effort, the last time a BYU defender intercepted two passes in a game was when Brandon Heaney did so against Georgia Tech in 2002.
O’Neill Chambers – Football (Special Teams) – Sophomore – Harmony, Fla.
Sophomore wide receiver O’Neill Chambers led BYU in all-purpose yards against UNLV with 182, including 124 yards on kick returns and 31 more on punt returns. Chambers returned two kicks on the night, including a 97-yard effort before finally being knocked out of bounds at the 2-yard line. His return came after UNLV had put together a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with 13:40 to go in the fourth quarter and killed any UNLV hope of making a comeback. The Cougars put it in the end zone on the next play to negate the just-occurred UNLV score. His 97-yard return is the longest BYU return since Mike Rigell’s 96-yard return for a touchdown in 1998. Taking over punt return duties from the injured McKay Jacobson, Chambers returned four punts for 31 yards, including a long return of 15 yards.
