DALLAS – BYU redshirt freshman offensive lineman Thomas Shoaf was named to the 16th annual Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America Monday.

Six offensive linemen made the Freshman All-America Team, with the five other linemen coming from Power 5 schools including Ohio State, Florida, Penn State, Michigan and Texas.

Shoaf, from Columbus, Indiana, played in 11 games this season, including nine starts at right tackle. He helped the Cougars to a nine-win season and blocked for running back Jamaal Williams who set the school’s career rushing yards record in 2016.

BYU’s offensive averaged 201.2 yards per game on the ground and ranked 12th nationally in third-down conversions at 47.69 percent on the year. Behind Shoaf and the offensive line, Williams ran for 1,375 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 10 games.

Fellow offensive lineman Tejan Koroma was named to the FWAA’s Freshman All-America Team following the 2014 season.
