Fan events lead up to start of 2017 BYU football season

PROVO, Utah — BYU football players reported for fall camp on Wednesday to continue practice preparations for the 2017 season. A variety of fan events will also take place leading up to the Cougars' season opener on Aug. 26 against Portland State in LaVell Edwards Stadium.  

Fans can get a sneak peek at the team during a public practice at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 17 (4:30-6 p.m.). BYU50, the annual social media campaign that allows Cougar fans all over the world to share in the buildup to the season and win BYU merchandise, continues its sweep across the country with its featured day in Utah taking place on Saturday, Aug. 5. In addition, fans can take advantage of a several other events in August, including Movie Night at LaVell Edwards Stadium (Aug. 4), Cougar Kickoff (Aug. 15), Cougar Sale (Aug. 15) and the Big Blue Bash (Aug. 19). 

Members of the 2017 BYU football team attended meetings and picked up their new gear on Wednesday after reporting to begin fall camp. The team will conduct its first practice of fall camp on Thursday. Information on the fan events are included below along with a link to a video and photo gallery of the opening day of camp.

“Moana" Movie Night at LaVell Edwards Stadium (Aug. 4)

Movie Night at LaVell Edwards Stadium takes place Friday night, Aug. 4. Gates 1 and 11 will open at 8 p.m. with the movie “Moana” starting at 9 p.m. Parking will be available in the south and southeast lots on movie night. Fans should bring blankets (no chairs) to sit on the field. The event is free. Concessions will be available and the newly remodeled Cougar Den will be open for touring from 8-9 p.m.

BYU50 (visits Utah on Aug. 5)

BYU50 is set to sweep through the state of Utah on Saturday, Aug. 5. By following BYU on Twitter (@BYUCougars), Facebook (Facebook.com/BYUFootball), Instagram (BYU Cougars), fans all across the state will have the opportunity to locate and win one of 40 BYU boxes placed throughout Utah during the day. Fans will have the chance to win a BYU helmet and merchandise during each box drop made throughout the state.  Follow BYU on social media and use the hashtag #BYU50. 

Cougar Kickoff (Aug. 15)

The 13th annual Cougar Kickoff is scheduled from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Haws Field (west of the Indoor Practice Facility). Cougar Club members can attend starting at 5:30 p.m. Athletes from the football, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and cross country teams will be on hand to meet with fans, sign autographs and run a variety of games and drills with kids. The festivities include free posters, face painting and balloon animals as well as the chance to take photos with Cosmo, the Cheer team and the Cougarettes. Admission is free.

Cougar Sale (Aug. 15)

In conjunction with Cougar Kickoff, the annual Cougar Sale takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 15 in the adjacent Indoor Practice Facility from 5-7 p.m. Cougar Club members can gain early admission at 4:30 p.m. by presenting their membership card. The Cougar Sale allows fans to pick up gameday shirts and posters and purchase athletic department clothing and gear at discounted prices. Admission is free.

Football Practice at LaVell Edwards Stadium (Aug. 17)

The football team will conduct an open practice session at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 17. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. with the practice scheduled to take place from 4:30-6 p.m. Admission is free.

Big Blue Bash (Aug. 19)

BYU Head Football Coach Kalani Sitake and members of the 2017 BYU football team will participate at the annual Big Blue Bash fundraising fan party hosted by the Cougar Club’s Salt Lake Chapter on Saturday evening, Aug. 19. Open to all BYU fans, this year’s Big Blue Bash will take place at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy. Gates open at 6 p.m. with free parking and local food trucks providing concessions for purchase, while fans can interact with Cosmo and BYU Cheerleaders, and enjoy games, photos, music and trivia-game giveaways until the program begins at 7 p.m. The Big Blue Bash will be hosted by BYU Sports Nation's Jarom Jordan and Spencer Linton along with Voice of the Cougars Greg Wrubell and BYUtv analyst and former BYU quarterback Blaine Fowler.

General seating starts at $5, with additional premium ticket opportunities available for $20 (priority seating in first three rows near the stage), $50 (priority seating in first three rows and a private meet and greet with Coach Kalani Sitake and the BYU players) and $125 (new Cougar Club membership and benefits, priority seating at event and for autographs, limited edition print of “Quarterback Factory”). General admission tickets can also be purchased day of the event at the door for $10. The event provides a great way to get ready for the 2017 season by hearing from BYU coaches and players and enjoying fun activities for all ages. A silent auction will take place for those in attendance as well as those who want to bid online to help fund an athletic scholarship.
