DALLAS — BYU freshman offensive lineman Campbell Barrington was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. He was one of 32 players selected to the prestigious team that included 13 offensive, 14 defensive and five special team players.

Barrington, a 6-6, 285-pound freshman from Spokane, Washington, started six games for BYU on the offensive line after playing a reserve role earlier in the season. He helped the Cougars offense finish the year ranked in the top 25 in 32 statistical categories, including No. 3 in red zone touchdown percentage (74.6).

In addition to being named All-American by the FWAA, Barrington also received All-America citations from Action Network, Pro Football Focus and Pro Football Network. He was also named to the Pro Football Network All-Independent First Team as well as the Phil Steele All-Independent First Team and was on the watch list for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.

Barrington was instrumental in helping BYU running back Tyler Allgeier lead the nation in rushing touchdowns (23) and set a new single-season BYU rushing record with 1,601 yards (No. 4 nationally). Allgeier was named an All-American by Sporting News and Phil Steele and was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award.

The 2021 season marks the 21st year the FWAA has honored a Freshman All-America team. Barrington joins offensive lineman Joe Alt of Notre Dame as one of two student-athletes representing the FBS Independent schools in 2021. BYU center and team captain James Empey was the last Cougar to be honored by the FWAA as a freshman All-American back in 2018.

“This was among the most competitive FWAA Freshman All-America Team selection to date, on account of COVID-19 eligibility allowances adding to the pool of players eligible to make the team,” said Mike Griffith, chair of the 2021 Freshman All-America Committee. “The talented group of young men who made this team are also to be applauded for their perseverance, as well as their performances, amid the unprecedented circumstances of these times in collegiate athletics.”

Barrington is one of several Cougars to be earn All-America honors or be selected to one of the All-Independent teams in 2021. For a comprehensive review of the season, check out BYU Football: 2021 Season Review
