BYU opens Diamond Head Classic on Wednesday against South Florida

PROVO, Utah –BYU men’s basketball heads to HawaiI this week for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The Cougars will play three games in four days beginning with South Florida on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MST.

Wednesday’s contest will be broadcast on ESPNU. It will also be broadcast live on BYU Sports Network on the BYU Radio – Sirius XM 143/89.1 FM HD2 and KSL 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

BYU Notes (9-2, 0-0 West Coast Conference)

  • Four players scored in double figures as BYU got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 89-71 victory over Weber State on Saturday. The Cougars made a season-high 16 3-pointers as they shot over 60 percent from downtown for the first time this season.
  • With their first win over Weber State in Ogden since 2014, BYU still hasn’t lost consecutive regular season games under Mark Pope.
  • Alex Barcello is in line to make his 71st consecutive start on Wednesday, which would tie Mekeli Wesley and Brandon Davies for the 10th longest streak in program history. The senior guard also ranks 13th in the 3-point field goals with 135.

  • South Florida enters the Diamond Head Classic at 4-5 overall following a 65-55 setback to Florida on Saturday in Sunrise, Fla.
  • Caleb Murphy is the leading scorer for the Bulls as the Youngstown, Ohio native is averaging 13.0 points per game. He is shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and 52.8 percent from the free throw after being named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman team in 2020-21.
  • USF ranks in the Top 15 nationally in two defensive categories, field goal percentage and scoring. Opposing teams are scoring just 57.4 points per game against the Bulls while shooting 37.2 percent.
