BYU faces Vanderbilt in winner’s bracket of Diamond Head Classic

PROVO, Utah – BYU faces Vanderbilt on Thursday evening in the winner’s bracket at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST at the Simplifi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Thursday’s contest will be broadcast on ESPN2. It will also be broadcast live on BYU Sports Network on the BYU Radio – Sirius XM 143/89.1 FM HD2 and KSL 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

BYU Notes (10-2, 0-0 West Coast Conference)

  • In their 54-39 victory over South Florida on Wednesday, the Cougars held a team under 40 points for the second time under head coach Mark Pope and first since Jan. 4, 2020 against Loyola Marymount. It was also the fewest points allowed in the history of the Diamond Head Classic.
  • Caleb Lohner and Fousseyni Traore combined for 20 points and 23 rebounds against USF. Lohner also pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds, 10 on the defensive glass, while Traore reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season.
  • BYU will face a school from the SEC on a neutral court for a 16th time in program history on Thursday. Four of their previous five meetings have been in the NCAA tournament.

  • Vanderbilt advanced to the winner’s bracket following a 68-54 victory over Hawaii on Wednesday. With the victory, the Commodores improved to 7-4 on the season.  
  • The Commodores are led by Jerry Stackhouse, who has accumulated a record of 27-41 during his three seasons in Nashville, Tenn.
  • Scottie Pippen Jr. scored a team-high 21 points in the win over Hawaii. The Los Angeles, Calif. native is Vandy’s leading scorer at 17.6 points per game shooting 42.0 percent from the floor, 31.3 percent from three and 70.7 percent from the free throw line.
