Saint Mary’s Last Outing — Men’s Basketball Too Much For Red Raiders

South Padre Island, TX - The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team got a huge night from sophomore center Tim Williams who recorded his second career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Saint Mary’s led by as much as 26 points early in the second half, as SMC cruised to a 88-68 victory over Texas Tech in the third game of the South Padre Island Invitational. As a team, the Gaels (6-0) shot an impressive 59.3 percent from the field, which included going 7-for-14 from 3-point range. But the real story was how SMC got it done down low. The Gaels finished the night with 48 points in the paint, which included 12 second chance points. Saint Mary’s once again out-rebounded their opponent 32 to 23. Texas Tech (4-2) shot 43.1 percent from the field, going 22-for-51, but could not overcome the Gaels impressive first half. Williams 20 points led all scorers in the game, but he was joined by four other Gaels in double figures. Mickey McConnell finished the night with 18 points, going 6-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. McConnell also dished out four assists. Rob Jones tallied 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including going 2-for-4 from 3-point range. Mitchell Young had an impressive night, with 10 points off a 5-for-6 shooting performance. Lastly, Matthew Dellavedova finished the evening with 10 points, going 3-for-8 from the field, including 1-for-3 from behind the arc and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Dellavedova also finished two assists shy of a double-double, tallying eight on the evening. Texas Tech opened up the game on a 4-0 run, but from there it was all Saint Mary’s. SMC went on a 20-2 run to take an early 20-6 lead. Leading the charge was the sharp shooting of McConnell who picked up five of his 14 first half points in the run. SMC kept up the pressure defensively the rest of the half, limiting the Red Raiders to just 23 points on 8-of-23 from the field. Texas Tech’s Brad Reese and Robert Lewandowski combined for 19 of the Texas Tech’s 23 first half points. Reese led the Red Raiders with 13 points on the night, going 3-for-9 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Saint Mary’s played nearly flawless basketball, shooting 71% from the field in the first half, going 20-for-28 from the floor, with most of the points coming in the key, as the Gaels were just 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Mitchell Young and Tim Williams combined for 15 points in the paint in the opening half. In the second half the Red Raiders came to life. Texas Tech’s John Roberson scored all 11 of his points in the first nine minutes of the half, cutting the Gaels lead to 19 with 11:41 to play. The strong two-man play between Williams and Dellavedova continued in the second half, as the guard dished a nice behind the back pass to Williams who made a strong move to the basket on the pick and roll to put the Gaels back up 20, with 8:55 to play. With 4:01 to play the Gaels turned to the bench, with SMC up 23, 79-56. Dellavedova hit three free throws to essentially put the game on ice.
