PALO ALTO, Calif. — BYU is tied for fifth place at The Goodwin after a pair of 4-under 66s from Carson Lundell and Cole Ponich led the Cougars to an 8-under (272) in the opening round Thursday.

No. 14 Stanford set the pace on day one, shooting 12-under (268) in its opening 18-holes. SMU (270) is two back at 10-under with No. 9 Washington (271) and No. 11 Georgia Tech (271) in a tie for third at 9-under. BYU (272) and Nevada (272) round out the top-5 of the 28-team event with 8-under first day total.

The first-round 66s by Lundell and Ponich's puts them both squarely in contention after day one. Lundell carded seven birdies, while Ponich had five birdies and a lone bogey to match his career low round.

Despite a double bogey on the opening hole, David Timmins (69) fought back with six birdies on the day to finish his first round at 1-under par in a tie for 40th.

Zac Jones posted an opening round 71 while Tyson Shelley rounded out the day for BYU with an opening round 73.

The Cougars tee off tomorrow at 7 a.m. PDT and will play with UC Davis and the University of San Diego. Live scoring for round two will be available at golfstat.com.
