BYU finishes ninth at The Goodwin

PALO ALTO, Calif — BYU men’s golf carded a final round 286 to finish in ninth place at The Goodwin Intercollegiate on Saturday at Stanford Golf Course.

Carson Lundell led the Cougars with his fourth top-10 finish of the season. The senior from Alpine, Utah, fired rounds of 66-66 71—203 to finish in a tie for eighth. His back-to-back 66s in rounds one and two were his best 18-hole scores of the year.

Although host Stanford began the day with a seven-shot lead, No. 9 Washington (271-277-270—818) carded a 10-under-par 270 on the final day to get to 22-under for the tournament and take home the team title.

Nevada (272-275-274—821), who also had the individual champion Peyton Callens, finished three-shots back at 19-under-par, followed by No. 14 Stanford in third at 17 under. SMU and Oregon rounded out the top-5 at 16-under and 12-under par respectively. The BYU Cougars shot 6-over in the final round to finish in solo ninth place.

Cole Ponich posted rounds of 66-73-73—212 to finish in a tie for 57th. David Timmins (69-68-77—214) cared a 54-hole total of 214 while freshman Tyson Shelley (73-71-71—215) turned in a 215 three-day total. Zac Jones rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with rounds of 71-77-71—219.

The Cougars have two weeks off before they travel to Santa Cruz, California, for the 75th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Western will be broadcast live on Golf Channel with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
