BYU men's golf captures third at Cleveland Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE -- Despite rough weather and a less-than-perfect finish, the BYU men's golf team powered past two top-10 teams Tuesday, snagging third place at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Invitational.

The No. 20 ranked Cougars (286-289-297--872), playing through wind and cold, finished ahead of No. 3 UCLA (293-291-291--875) and 8th-ranked Arizona State (285-302-288--875). Texas (281-278-288--847), ranked No. 15 nationally, ran away with the tournament by shooting 5-under-par overall.

BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said he was pleased with the outcome, but feels his team can still play much better.

"We beat some really good teams," Brockbank said. "But, we should have been at least five shots better."

Individually, the Cougars had three players finish in the top-20. Sophomore Oscar Alvarez (68-73-74--215) and junior Todd Miller (71-72-72--215) both tied for ninth place while freshman Jake Ellison (72-69-75--216) faded in the final round, but still came away with 14th. Junior Greg Machtaler (75-75-77--227) and freshman Clay Ogden (78-77-76--231) rounded out the Cougars' five.

Texas' Matthew Rosenfield (67-68-73--208) was the Classic's top individual, shooting a 5-under-par 208.

Brockbank said he was happy with his team's success, but wants his team to be more mentally tough.

"The results look good on paper," he said. "But, we're in a funk and we need to play better."

BYU finished sixth at the Cleveland Classic in 2003 while UCLA came away with the top spot.

The Cougars rest until March 15-16, when they will compete in the Morris Williams Invitational in Austin, Texas.
