Swim team kicks off Texas Invite with 800-yard free relays

AUSTIN, Texas – BYU’s swim team competed in the first two events of the annual Texas Invitational Wednesday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

“We had a solid night with several best times on both the men and women relay teams,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “It was a great way to start out the meet.”

The women competed in the first event of the Texas Invitational, the 800-yard freestyle relay, and recorded a time of 7:36.41 placing 21st. Senior captains Natalie Bennion and Vanessa Moffatt recorded split times of 1:51.34 and 1:52.23, respectively. Freshman Katia Quezada took the third leg with a split time of 1:55.39 and junior Taylor Ballard anchored the team with a split of 1:57.45.

The men’s team started out strong in the 800-yard freestyle relay, recording a time of 6:35.81 and earning 16th place. Senior captain Preston Jenkins led off the team in a 1:35.94 split. Junior Kunmi Ogunfeibo followed posting a split time of 1:40.01 before freshman Brad Prolo recorded a 1:39.21 split. Freshman Christopher Pierce anchored the team finishing with a 1:40.65 split.

The second day of the invitational continues Thursday morning with prelims starting at 10 a.m CST with finals and relays beginning at 6 p.m. CST. Live results are available on the BYU swim and dive schedule page.
