Swimmers fall to University of Hawai'i

HONOLULU -- The BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost to the University of Hawai'i on Friday and Saturday in their first meet of the season.

The women's team lost to Hawaii 206-146, while the men's team barely lost by a score of 183-168.

"Friday was tough," head coach John Brooks said. "We were feeling the effects of jet lag and were a little tired. But we came out ready to swim on Saturday, were excited and swam better. I was happy with the way we finished out the meet strong."

Alexandria Sorensen was the first BYU swimmer to win an event. She placed first in the 50 free with a time of 23.71. Payton Sorenson followed her lead and won the men's 50 free with a time of 21.03.

Hayden Palmer won both the the men's 400 IM and the 200 IM. He won the 400 IM with a time of 4:00.99 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.05.

Preston Jenkins was another two-time individual winner, winning both the 100 back and the 200 back. The freshman touched the wall in the 100 back in a time of 50.33 and the 200 back with a time of 1:49.39.

Kimberly Welch Doroghian won the women's 100 fly in a time of 55.98 with fellow teammate Sorensen coming in third with a time of 56.74.

Junior Hailey Campbell won the 200 back with a time of 2:02.32 with Doroghian and Adelin Marsh tapping in fourth and fifth, respectively.

The men's relay teams were strong, winning three of the four relay events on the weekend. The men placed first in the 400 medley relay, the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

Nicholas Suder took first place in both diving events. He won the 3-meter with a score of 304.95 and the 1-meter with a score of 314.95. Edward Young came in third in both events. For the women, Dayna Christensen won the 3-meter with a score of 314.90 and took third place in the 1-meter with a score of 260.85.

The Cougars are back in action in an alumni meet on Friday at 6:00 p.m. MT in the Richards Building Pool.
