Witsken, Shurts celebrate top-10 marks

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s track and field completed its second day of competition meets throughout southern California on Friday.

Caleb Witsken, Dallin Shurts and Jake Grimsman each finished runner-up in their events on Friday. 

Witsken cleared a personal-best 5.50m/18-0.5 in the men's pole vault, tying him for seventh nationally on the season and No. 5 all-time at BYU with a mark Trent Powell set in 2005. 

Nathan Burnett also competed in the pole vault on Friday, taking eighth at 5.00m/16-4.75. 

Shurts tossed a 60.93m/199-11 to finish second in the discus, nearly topping a new personal best he set on Thursday at the Pacific Coast Invitational. There, the junior from Banks, Oregon recorded a throw of 61.10m/200-5.5, finishing third of 55. This jumped Shurts past a 1974 mark from former Cougar Zdravko Pecar for No. 7 all-time at BYU. 

Jake Grimsman took second in the high jump collegiate open with a clearance of 2.10m/6-10.75.

Danny Bryant recorded a throw of 49.54m/162-6 in the men's hammer throw to finish 45th. Bryant finished 11th and 20th, respectively, in the shot put and discus throw at Thursday's Pacific Coast Invitational. 

The Cougars wrap up the week's action with a few more events on Saturday at Mt. SAC and Long Beach State.
