Cougars blank Utah State 4-0

PROVO, Utah — BYU softball blanked Utah State 4-0 Tuesday evening at Gail Miller Field behind solo shots by Huntyr Ava and Rylee Jensen and a five-strikeout performance on the mound from Autumn Moffat-Korth.

  • Ava launched a solo shot to center in the second inning to give BYU an early 1-0 lead. The homer was Ava’s sixth of the season
  • Jensen also homered to center in the third to start a three-run Cougar inning. The home run was Jensen's 10th of the season

Ava launched a pitch in the middle of the zone well over the centerfield wall to put BYU (17-13) up 1-0 in the bottom of the second frame.

Jensen smacked a solo shot of her own to center in the bottom of the third, giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. BYU added another two runs in the inning to double its lead, 4-0. Paulson drove in Peterson from second on an RBI single up the middle before Epenesa sent in Sterner, pinch running for Paulson, on an RBI single to right.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Moffat-Korth sealed the 4-0 BYU shutout win with a strikeout, her fifth of the game.

The Cougars open West Coast Conference this play this weekend with a three-game series at Saint Mary’s on Friday and Saturday, April 9-10. The Friday matchup will begin at 3 p.m. PDT. On Saturday, the two teams will play a doubleheader with games starting at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. PDT. All three contests will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
