SALT LAKE -- Two solo home runs by freshman Neta Lei helped the BYU softball team (33-15, 11-8) split its final games of the regular season at Utah 1-0, 2-7. The Cougars finished the regular season with their best ever record and a .688 winning percentage.
"We're a very young team and I think the future looks very bright for BYU softball," head coach Gordon Eakin said.
In the first game, Lei hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to give the Cougars a 1-0 win. Freshman Brooke Boyce (11-3) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing eight hits through seven innings.
Boyce started game two and was credited with the loss after giving up a two run home run to Utah's Niki Hayhurst in the first inning. She was replaced in the second inning by senior Cynthia Fallowfield, who gave struck out three over three innings and allowed five runs.
Sophomore Niki Andersen and senior Mandy Flint both made appearances late in the game to warm up before the Mountain West Conference Tournament next weekend in San Diego.
Sloppy defense in the third inning allowed Utah (20-25, 7-9) to score five runs and take a 7-0 lead. Only of the five Ute runs in the third were earned.
"We've played through some nagging injuries over the past two weeks and I think that had a lot to do with the poor defense on the field today," Eakin said.
Lei hit a home run over the center field fence in the fourth for her third home run of the week and the sixth of her career. Sophomore Lauren Watson hit a home run in the seventh inning for her ninth home run of the season. BYU finished with a league-best 56 home runs on the season, 29 more than Utah, who finished second with 27.
The MWC Tournament starts next Thursday in San Diego. BYU will wait for the results of Colorado State's games tomorrow when the Rams host UNLV to see it BYU finishes second in the conference. The Cougars' opponent in the first round will be determined Sunday evening.
