CEDAR CITY -- Home runs and a total team effort led BYU to a 10-3 and 6-0 sweep over Southern Utah Tuesday.
The Cougars, now 33-16, cranked out four home runs by four different players in the doubleheader. BYU got superb pitching from Summer Tobias and Dani Urincho, who didn't surrender an earned run in either of the games. The Cougars never trailed in either game.
"We seemed to put together all facets of the game today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Our pitchers did a nice job shutting down a very potent Southern Utah offense."
Game one scoring started for BYU in the second inning when Paige Paramore, Cortney Nix and Tracee Hoch each came up with a single. Paramore scored on Hoch's RBI hit while Nix scored on a wild pitch.
The homer party started in the third when Emi Snow connected with her fifth round-tripper of the year, a two-run shot to left. Three batters later, Nix connected with a two-run dong of her own to give the Cougars a comfortable 6-0 lead.
After SUU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, BYU added four more runs in the top of the fourth to break the game open. RBI singles by Ianeta Le`i, Snow and Jodi Norton and a sacrifice fly by Nix produced the runs for the Cougars.
Paramore blasted her second homer of the season in the top of the sixth and reliever Brooke Boyce-Humbert pitched a perfect sixth to put an early end to the game.
Lindi Kennedy continued the home run parade when she went deep in the second inning to start the scoring for BYU in game two.
Urincho dominated from the pitchers circle, getting her second complete-game shut out. Urincho only surrendered three hits while striking out three in the win.
The Cougars big inning came in the top of the fifth when they scored four runs on five hits to go up 6-0. Le`i's bat provided the big blow with a bases loaded, two-run single. Snow also stroked a RBI single.
Overall, BYU has won 10 of its last 12 contests. The Cougars return home Thursday when they welcome conference foe Colorado State. Game time is 5 p.m. At Saturday's doubleheader against New Mexico BYU will honor five departing seniors after the games.
