PROVO -- Andrea Ramirez’s two-hit, three-RBI night propelled BYU (35-10 overall, 8-2 MWC) to an 11-6 victory over New Mexico (11-32 overall, 1-9 MWC), extending the Cougars’ win streak to five games Friday at Gail Miller Field.
“This team is very talented and we hit the ball well tonight,” said head coach Gordon Eakin. “We need to continue that and finish games in order to go deep into the NCAA tournament.”
After a lead-off double by junior Kristin Delahoussaye in the bottom of the fourth, Ramirez added two insurance runs to BYU's 6-0 lead with a two-out home run. Ramirez's round-tripper was her 15th of the season, tallying her third RBI of the night.
After a six-run second inning for the Cougars, junior hurler Paige Affleck settled in, recording five strikeouts, walking three and yielding two earned runs en route to her Mountain West Conference-leading 25th win of the season. With the win, Affleck moved within one of the BYU season record of 26, set by Summer Tobias in 2006.
As a team, the Cougars added to their conference lead in hits with 15 on the night, bringing their season total to 400. Eight of nine BYU starting batters scored runs in the game, improving the Cougars’ conference-leading mark to 300 runs scored.
Senior Angeline Quiocho was 3-for-4 on the night with three RBI, a stolen base and two runs. Quiocho continues to lead the MWC with 19 home runs, a .419 batting average and 127 total bases.
The final game of the two-game series will be played 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Gail Miller Field and broadcast live on BYUtv.
