BYU improves in final round in Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. – The BYU women's golf team had every golfer improve in their final round at the Lady Red Wolves Classic, including Allysha Mae Mateo who finished second overall Tuesday afternoon. 

"I was really happy for Allysha," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "I was glad to see her play so well, along with Naomi (Soifua) playing really well today too. I am looking forward to playing better at the next event."

Mateo posted a final round of 70 (-2) to finish in second place overall. She finished three strokes behind the tournament winner, Julie Hovland of South Alabama. 

The Cougars combined in the final round for a 298 (+10), moving them up one spot from yesterday to an 11th-place finish at the Sage Meadows Country Club. The 298 matched BYU's first-round score and was a 12-stroke improvement from the second round, totaling 906 (+42). South Alabama won the tournament after posting a 290 (+2) in the final round for a total score over 36 holes of 866 (+2). 

Soifua tied for 22nd after shooting a 73 (+1) on Tuesday, improving by two strokes from her first two rounds. 

Cynthia Tu tied for 62nd with a 76 (+4) and Annick Haczkiewicz shot a 79 (+7) to tie for 75th. Alina Vannarath finished with a 79 (+7) to tie for 80th. 

Next up, BYU will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for its second of three fall tournaments. The Cowgirl Classic at the Karsten Creek Golf Club will take place on October 22-23.
