Cougars to host Saint Mary’s after big win at Gonzaga

PROVO, Utah — No. 20 BYU women's soccer will host Saint Mary's this week on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at South Field.

Wednesday’s matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT on byutv.org or the BYUtv app. The game will also be carried live on the BYU Sports Network — BYU Radio 107.9 FM/BYU Cougars App.

IN THE RANKINGS. Unranked for the past two weeks, BYU is now listed at No. 20 in this week's NCAA DI women's soccer poll.

LAST TIME ON THE FIELD. At Gonzaga, BYU won its first West Coast Conference game of the season with a dominating 6-1 victory over the No. 16 Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 2 (goals by Brecken Mozingo (2), Bella Folino, Cameron Tucker, Mikayla Colohan and Rachel McCarthy). It was also the Cougars’ first road win of the season. BYU owned 51 percent of the possession in the game, and outshot Gonzaga 22-14, with a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. Saturday's offensive performance by the Cougars resulted in the Bulldogs being outshot by an opponent for the first time this season.

WCC WEEKLY AWARDS. Mozingo won this week's West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday. This award marked the third WCC weekly honor collected by BYU for the 2021 season and second-ever individual career honor for Mozingo.

THE GAELS. Saint Mary's is 7-1-2 following a 2-0 win over the University of San Francisco in its WCC opener. The Gaels didn't get on the scoreboard until the second half, with goals from AnnaMaria DiGeronimo and Emily Jensen in the 70th and 75th minutes respectively, to get the victory in the conference opener. The Gaels' only loss of the season came from a road game, losing 2-1 to UC Davis. In the 22nd minute of the match, junior midfielder Suzana Shibukawa struck first with a header, but the Gaels would later get scored on twice in the second half. Five teams in the WCC won their WCC season-opener, with both the Gaels and the Cougars on that list.

COUGARS VS. GAELS. The Cougars have never lost to the Gaels, but the two programs have tied twice (BYU is 9-0-2). The largest margin of victory occurred in 2019 when the Cougars shut out the Gaels 8-0. The 2019 performance by BYU is tied for fourth place in all-time goals scored in a single game for BYU.
