No. 11 BYU travels to Santa Clara for huge WCC matchup against 2020 national champs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 11 BYU women's soccer will travel to Santa Clara on Saturday, Oct. 30 to take on the No. 25 Broncos of Santa Clara University at Stevens Stadium. 

BYU and Santa Clara both entered last weekend undefeated in West Coast Conference play, in the top two spots in the conference standings. BYU won 2-0 on Saturday, while Santa Clara lost 2-0. BYU now enters this week’s play as the lone undefeated team in the WCC and controls its own destiny as it attempts to lock up a conference championship.

Saturday’s matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. PDT on the WCC Network. The game will also be carried live on the BYU Sports Network — BYU Radio 107.9 FM/BYU Cougars App.

IN THE RANKINGS. BYU moved up to No. 11 this week, its highest ranking so far this season in the NCAA DI women's soccer poll. Additionally, BYU is ranked No. 19 in the Top Drawer Soccer college soccer national ranking.

LAST TIME ON THE FIELD. On Saturday, the Cougars defeated Loyola Marymount University 2-0 on South Field. Bella Folino scored 54 seconds into the match, marking BYU’s third-fastest goal scored in program history. The last goal of the night came from senior Mikayla Colohan off of a penalty kick. On the season, Colohan is currently tied for eighth in goals nationwide with 13 and is third in assists with an average of .80 per game. BYU’s scoring offense is ranked No. 1 in the country, with an average of 3.87 goals per game.

THE BRONCOS. Santa Clara is 8-5-2 on the season, coming off of its first West Coast Conference loss, 2-0 against Portland last Saturday. Three of the Broncos’ other four losses have come against top-10 teams nationally: 1-0 against No. 4 UCLA, 3-1 to No. 10 Stanford and 1-0 to No. 3 Virginia. The Broncos are the reigning 2020 national champions, and were 10-1-1 last season. 

COUGARS VS. BRONCOS. The Cougars have beaten the Broncos three times out of 16 all-time matchups. BYU is 3-8-5 overall. BYU has defeated Santa Clara at Stevens Stadium one time in program history, with the 2-1 win occurring last season on March 31, 2021. Cameron Tucker had the winning-goal in the 57th minute.

EVENT PROTOCOL. All Santa Clara Athletics home events operate in compliance with state, county and university COVID-19 guidelines. While masks are not required for outdoor events on campus, Santa Clara highly encourages fans to wear masks especially when social distancing guidelines cannot be met or when others around are eating or drinking. Seating in Stevens Stadium is general admission, and Santa Clara encourages everyone to utilize appropriate social distancing in the stands and common areas.
